REVIEWMetro, New York's latest tab that launched this morning, is hardly The New York Times of free dailies as Publisher Henry E. Scott boasted to E&P yesterday. But it's not the US Weekly of newspapers either. And best of all, Britney Spears is not on the cover -- at least for today -- although there is a small snap of Angelina Jolie.
Instead, today's Metro managed to squeeze three items on its front page, under its bright green logo, all courtesy of The Associated Press (in fact, flipping through, it seems that a large share of the total copy is provided by AP): A story on Rumsfeld's remarks on the abuses of Iraqi prisoners, a photo of a news helicopter that crashed in Brooklyn yesterday, and a rather tepid lead story on the security plans for the GOP convention at Madison Square Garden.
Running down the side of the front page are a handful of short takes on President Bush's interviews with Arab networks, a teaser for a column written by Mayor Michael Bloomberg -- a rather strange welcome that touts Metro and then goes into the health of the city's economy -- and a graf on asbestos. Only one tiny picture of Jolie (who just might be involved with Brad Pitt) runs on the bottom left-hand corner.
Overall, the stories on gossip and entertainment seem to be limited to a reasonable three pages (five if you include sections on style and stuff). There are business, sports, and travel departments as well.
As promised, the tab launched with 28 pages and for the most part the color is sharp, the newsprint feels a bit thicker than amNewYork (which is also 28 pages today) and the layout a little more sophisticated.
Today's amNewYork front page features an entire story -- with original reporting with comments from Sen. Charles Schumer among other New York politicians -- on Rumsfeld commenting on the Iraqi prisoner abuses.
