By: Staff reports Broadsheet Experiment Received Lukewarm Response
The alternative weekly New York Press has returned to its original tabloid format, ending
its year-and-a-half experiment with a broadsheet section wrapped around a tabloid section.
The 12-year-old paper adopted the hybrid format in an attempt to distinguish itself from
established rival The Village Voice. The broadsheet section contained the paper's columns
and political news and was aimed at upscale readers and advertisers, while the tab section
(the traditional alternative format) contained cultural news and entertainment listings.
Editor John Strausbaugh said a lukewarm response from advertisers, who are used to seeing
alternatives in tabloid size, and an increase in paper prices earlier in the year led to
the decision.
'It was a noble experiment that didn't pan out,' he said, adding that readers said they liked
the tab format for its ease of handling.
