For the second time, union employees at Newsday on Sunday rejected a proposed contract that would have cut wages by 5% to 10% immediately and frozen pay for the next two years.
On Newsday’s Web site, staff writer James T. Madore reported members of Local 406 of the Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters rejected the contract 331 to 139.
In January, union members overwhelmingly rejected a contract proposal that called for similar wage cuts. At the time the union said it would not accept cuts demanded of no other New York City-area newspaper union.
Local 406 represents newsroom employees, truck drivers, press operators, pre-press workers, platemakers and maintenance workers at the newspaper.
