Plainville, Mass., police were alerted to an early-morning break-in Oct. 9 at a convenience store by a newspaper delivery man who discovered the store's door had been pried open, The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro reported.
Police said the burglar made off with approximately $1,500 and 150 cartons of cigarettes at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday in a crime similar to others in three nearby communities.
At about the same hour in Wichita, Kan., the night before, a newspaper carrier discovered the body of a man killed in a one-car crash.
The man was thrown from his car after it struck a guardrail. The vehicle later came to a stop on its side in a creek several hundred feet away. The Wichita Eagle reported that the driver, believed to be the car's only occupant, lost control at a sharp turn near his home while speeding and not wearing a seat belt.
