More than 59 million people visited an online newspaper during Q1 compared to the same period a year ago, or 37.6% of all active Internet users.
Nielsen//NetRatings (owned by E&P parent Nielsen) provided the analysis on behalf of the NAA.
Page views to newspaper Web sites grew too, nearly 3 billion per month during the quarter compared to 2.7 billion for the same period last year.
?These record-setting numbers underscore newspapers? success in capturing online audiences and the importance of newspaper Web sites to the growing national footprint,? John Sturm, NAA president and CEO, said in a statement.
The time spent on newspaper Web sites has increased as well, growing 11.5% to 45 minutes -- per month.
The NAA said that two monthly statistics also broke records: In January, visitors generated 3.1 billion page views and March results reveal the largest unique audience at 59.5 million visitors.
