N.J. Synagogue To Honor Daniel Pearl

By: (AP) A synagogue is naming its Hebrew school in honor of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Pearl's relatives said they would attend the October ceremony to name the school affiliated with Temple B'nai Shalom, a Reform synagogue with a congregation of about 600 families. The school is currently unnamed.

Pearl was Jewish, but had no ties to the synagogue or school.

The school will also add courses on tolerance and music and an annual Daniel Pearl Lecture.

Pearl's parents welcomed the temple's initiative to establish the center in East Brunswick, a few miles from where Pearl was born.

"We draw comfort from knowing that a new generation of youngsters will pursue the values to which Danny dedicated his life: truth, compassion, and courage," the family said in a statement.

Pearl, 38, disappeared Jan. 23 in Karachi while researching links between Pakistani extremists and Richard C. Reid, arrested in December on a flight from Paris to Miami with explosives in his shoes.

A body believed to be the American correspondent's was found in May near a shed in Karachi where he disappeared. DNA tests on the body found in a shallow grave confirm that it is that of Pearl, a U.S. official said Friday.
