N.Y.'s 'Adirondack Express' Sold

By: E&P Staff The weekly Adirondack Express in Old Forge, N.Y., has been bought by Richard Barker, publisher of The Recorder, a daily in Amsterdam, N.Y., according to a statement.

James Gies, the former owner of the Adirondack Express, bought the weekly in 1990 after working as assistant to the chancellor of Syracuse University for 18 years. Gies said the sale would strengthen the paper.

"This is a fine newspaper which we will do everything we can to make even better," Barker said. The Recorder already owns another weekly, the Hamilton County News in Speculator, N.Y.

Barker said Express readers should not see significant changes under the new ownership.

W.B. Grimes & Company represented the Recorder in the transaction.
