After a year-and-a-half, The New York Times is bringing its hyperlocal journalism experiment in the Garden State to a close.
The Local, the Times’ online pilot project launched in March 2009 and designed to provide coverage of Maplewood, Millburn and South Orange, N.J., is ending, according to a blog post by the Gray Lady Wednesday. Two full-time Metro reporters and a Metro editor had been devoted to the effort, which also relied on outside contributors.
The Times says it is “passing the baton” to another Website, Baristanet.com, which has covered Montclair, Glen Ridge and Bloomfield, N.J., since 2004. Three years ago it was named the Best Placeblog in America, and it became a member of the New Jersey Press Association in 2009.
The Times’ hyperlocal blog covering Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, is still active.
