By: Dave Astor When John Tierney joins The New York Times lineup of op-ed columnists next month, he'll also enter syndication with The New York Times News Service.
The Times today named the conservative/libertarian Tierney to its op-ed page after the retirement of William Safire. Laurence M. Paul, executive editor of the Times news service, told E&P he's "proud" to soon have Tierney on the news service's roster.
Times op-ed columnists automatically become part of the service's package, which goes to approximately 650 newspapers in the United States and abroad. That doesn't mean Tierney, Maureen Dowd, Bob Herbert, Paul Krugman, and others each have 650 clients. Some clients don't buy the full package, and newspapers that do buy it can choose to use or not use the Times op-ed columns that arrive along with stories and other content.
Paul recalled knowing Tierney when they both worked at the Times. "John is a delightful guy to deal with and an absolutely gorgeous writer," said Paul. "He will make a major contribution to the reading public." The executive editor added that the "breadth" of Tierney's writing talent includes the ability to at times be "humorous and off-center."
