The Orange County Register will eliminate 102 positions as a result of decreased circulation and revenue, the newspaper reported Wednesday.
The reductions are spread among almost every department, the
Register said. Eighty-two of the newspaper's 1,749 full-time employees will be laid off effective Friday, and 20 vacancies will not be filled.
"While advertising revenue has been declining all year, the events of Sept. 11 caused a dramatic and immediate shortfall, which has continued to deteriorate,"
Register publisher and chief executive N. Christian Anderson III said. "As the economy continued to worsen, we took a close look at our expenses and made the painful decision to eliminate positions so we can keep our business sound."
As of March 31, the
Register had a daily circulation of 353,334 and a Sunday circulation of 410,207.
