Ottaway Joins Real Cities Network

By: E&P Staff Ottaway Newspapers Inc. on Monday became the latest chain to join Knight Ridder's Real Cities national online advertising network.

A subsidiary of New York-based Dow Jones & Co. Inc., Ottaway publishes 15 daily and 17 weekly publications across the country. The chain operates 20 Web sites with a total of 750,000 unique visitors.

"Ottaway brings valuable regional depth to Real Cities," said Knight Ridder Digital President and CEO Hilary Schneider in a statement. "The power of the network is its ability to aggregate local online audiences for national advertisers and partners, and Ottaway's local expertise in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon, and California is a welcome addition to the network."

"We joined to build a stronger national revenue stream, while we continue to focus on our local customers," said George Dratelis, corporate Internet director for Ottaway.

Real Cities Director Alexandra Salomon said Ottaway's timing was good. "We're seeing increased political spending in California as a result of the governor recall election, and Ottaway's sites are in a good position to benefit." Ottaway owns The Record of Stockton, Calif., and the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Real Cities now consists of over 100 local Web sites. Most are owned by Knight Ridder, but the following newspaper groups are also members: McClatchy, Media General, MediaNews Group, and Scripps.
