By: Joe Strupp A week after the sudden death of Parade columnist James Brady, Publisher Randy Siegel says no decisions have been made on how to replace him, if at all, but said the magazine would not run old columns or introduce a new feature soon.
?Everyone at Parade is still mourning Jim?s loss, he was just an incredible man,? Siegel said Monday. ?It is a huge loss for us, but over the next few weeks, we will start looking at options. We want to do what is right for our readers.?
He added, ?We have to take our time to make sure we consider all the different options.?
Brady, who first began his ?In Step With? weekly column in 1986, was among the most popular and longest-running features in the weekly newspaper supplement.
His one-page columns were regularly found on the second-to-last page. He died a week ago at 80 from what is believed to have been a stroke
Currently, his last two columns are set to run on Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. Siegel said the Feb. 22 issue will close on Thursday and will include a note about his death. He said some kind of feature will run in his space, but no decision on a permanent replacement has been made.
?Our editors are still deciding what to do with the Feb. 22 issue,? he said. ?We are not going to run older columns for Jim because his interviews are always so timely. We have no plans to introduce a new feature at this time.?
Parade has posted a tribute to Brady on its Web site, www.parade.com, which includes what editors consider his best columns from the past. Parade circulates in 470 Sunday newspapers.
