Philly Newspaper Guild Reports Progress in Knight Ridder Bid

Posted
By: E&P Staff While most of the media reports focus on possible bids for Knight Ridder by giant companies, such as Gannett, and investor groups, a labor-based initiative continues its own efforts somewhat behind the scenes.

Henry J. Holcomb, president of The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia, reported to guild members today that after working with an outside consultant they are "making good progress in creating a worker-friendly company to buy the Knight Ridder papers that have collective bargaining agreements with our union. Our work has convinced us that such a company can create reasonable and reliable financial gains for our investment partners, provide better service to our readers and advertisers, and be a better place to work for our members."

"In addition to the Guild's effort," he revealed in a memo posted at the Romenesko site at www.poynter.org, "we are in touch with two other groups that also are lining up investors to buy the Inquirer and Daily News, but have declined to be identified. The early indications are that these groups have honorable intentions and would work effectively with us."

He said he was "feeling better about our chances every week."
