Howard G. Sutton, 49, to publisher and CEO of The Providence Journal Co., Providence, R.I., effective April 1, from assistant publisher, president and chief operating officer.
He succeeds Stephen Hamblett, 64, who retires March 31 but remains chairman of The Providence Journal Co. through 2000, a director of The Providence Journal through 2001, and a director of parent company A.H. Belo Corp. of Dallas until he turns 70 in 1004.
