By: E&P Staff Miami-based Quipp Inc. sold Packman multifunction packaging systems to two metro dailies last month and will equip Salt Lake City's new plant with its packaging and wrapping equipment.
The Cincinnati Enquirer bought three Packman systems for installation this month. Another Packman being installed this month, at The Dallas Morning News, is expected to be shown in operation during a March Nexpo tour of the paper's Plano plant, which runs more than 40 Quipp Stackers.
Using technology familiar to operators and maintenance personnel, Packman was designed for both ROP and insert applications, using a combination of heavy-duty stacker, three-quarter wrapper, ink-jet printerm and mobile strapping module adaptable to either left or right bundle delivery. Mobile and based on existing stacker configurations, Packman may be adapted to most existing stacker locations with minimal or no relocation of existing peripheral equipment.
Salt Lake City's Newspaper Agency Corp., responsible for business-side functions of the jointly operated Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News, bought eight Quipp Model 500 W Stackers, 10 Quipp Viper Bottomwrappers and extensive Quipp floor equipment -- all of which will be installed in 2005 in the papers' new facility, now under construction.
