SCC Adds MediaServer for Solaris, Oracle

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Software Construction Co. of Atlanta plans to release a Sun Solaris version of its MediaServer multimedia production and archiving system, using Oracle database management. Development of the product, under way for several months, is expected to reach prerelease status in the next 60 days. SCC is discussing alpha testing with existing MediaServer sites and hopes to begin on-site testing later this year.

The first release will include SCC's core MediaServer system, SCC MediaFactory, Verity search engine, Assignment, Delivery and ServerOps modules running on Solaris and Oracle. The Web Browser Access Module for Solaris and the TearSheets Module for Solaris and Oracle are planned for a second round of development, to begin immediately after the first release. The Solaris version will support both Windows and Macintosh OSX MediaGrid clients, and will support the Web browser client in the first release via a Windows IIS Server connected to the Solaris MediaServer system. The Solaris system will offer essentially all features and functions in the Windows version, with the few differences largely a consequence of platform differences.

SCC Vice President and Product Manager Lee Funnell said "some sites have a large investment in Sun hardware and Oracle software, as well as staff expertise. They have expressed a desire to see our server product on that platform...."

In addition to Sun and Oracle technologies, SCC selected ODBC technology from DataDirect, search technology from Verity, and software development libraries from MainSoft, allowing it to create Windows and Solaris products using a single code base, maintaining both products at the same release level.
