By: E&P Staff The E.W. Scripps Co. of Cincinnati announced several executive appointments this week.

The Corpus Christi (Texas) Caller-Times named Patrick J. Birmingham, 46, as president and publisher. He succeeds Larry L. Rose, who is retiring.

Rose's newspaper career began in 1964 at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He joined the Caller-Times in 1987.

Birmingham comes to the Caller-Times from Scripps' Ventura County Star in Ventura, Calif., where he was executive vice president and general manager.

The Knoxville (Tenn.) News-Sentinel appointed Vince Vawter to the newly created position of publisher of special projects, effective July 1.

Vawter, 57, is currently publisher and president of the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press. He previously served as editor and president in Evansville and managing editor.

Before moving to Evansville eight years ago, Vawter was managing editor of the Knoxville paper.

"We're turning to Vince to help us take full advantage of all of the business opportunities that our new production facilities make possible for us here in Knoxville," said Bruce Hartmann, president and publisher of the News-Sentinel, in a statement.
