Showing sources can strengthen trust in news videos, research finds

Posted

News videos can gain credibility when audiences are shown where the reporting came from, according to research described in Nieman Lab. Proof News and researchers at Sciences Po tested short-form videos with 2,000 U.S. adults, comparing source labels, newsroom-standards labels and videos with no label.

Source information placed in video descriptions was particularly effective at improving trust measures. The effects were stronger among some groups, including respondents identifying as Democrats or expressing high trust in science. A separate test of text articles found fewer statistically significant improvements.

For newsrooms producing social video, the findings suggest a practical experiment: clearly identify reporting sources and limitations alongside the content. The results do not mean every disclosure format will work equally well for every audience.
