By: E&P Staff Looking through the more than 100 pages of the Audit Bureau of Circulations FAS-FAX report released Monday can leave one perplexed, even alarmed. Page after page brings news of small daily circulation gains for some papers, and larger losses for many more, from San Francisco to Atlanta. Meanwhile, some of the weekday gainers showed Sunday losses. How could this happen, with the economy recovering (at least a little) and massive efforts by the industry in the past two years to reverse historic circulation declines?
While analysts sort this out, here's a list of some mid-sized and smaller papers that managed to show some gains, or absorb troubling losses. The balance, unfortunately, is weighted toward those in a slump. (Also see
"Many Papers Lose Weekday Readers".)
