Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., is bidding up to
$500 million for dozens of newspapers owned by Thomson Corp., the
Associated Press reported Wednesday afternoon.
The newspapers are located in Indiana, Georgia, Maryland, and West
Virginia, according to David Bronner, investment director for Retirement
Systems of Alabama, which has underwritten other investments by
Community Newspaper.
Bronner told the AP that Community Newspaper would get one-third of the
130 newspapers on the selling block. Community Newspaper already owns
250 dailies and weeklies in the South and Midwest.
