'St. Pete Weekly' To Run Ironminds.com

Posted Friday, January 11, 2002 12:00 am

By: St. Pete Weekly Newspapers of Florida will operate the alternative journalism site Ironminds.com under an agreement signed with New York Metropolis, a new weekly covering the boroughs of New York City. Metropolis is published by Andy Wang, who founded Ironminds in 1999.

The deal includes an option for the St. Pete Weekly to acquire Ironminds.com.

St. Pete Weekly Managing Editor Trevor Aaronson will serve as editor of the Web site. Aaronson hopes to build a cooperative of independently owned alternative newsweeklies. "Ironminds.com will syndicate reportage, columns, and arts criticism among its participating newspapers," he said in a statement.

Aaronson added that he hopes Ironminds.com will allow participating newspapers to pool their resources in order to compete with dailies and alternative chains such as Village Voice Media and Creative Loafing. NewcityNet LLC of Chicago also runs an alternative weekly portal, Newcity.com.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
