By: Joe Strupp The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., claiming it can save $300,000 per year, has cut six of its daily comic strips and reduced its two-page comics spread down to one and a half.
In an unusual lead editor's note on the front page of its 'Today' feature section Monday, the paper announced the move, stating: "We are venturing into these uncongenial waters for a reason: Cost." The note later added, "that's a saving we can use to maintain the strength of our primary mission -- coverage of New Jersey and its environs."
The comics removed included: Rose is Rose, Pickles, Frazz, Nest Heads, Heart of the City, and Loose Parts. They will be available online, however, at the paper's Web site.
In addition, while one page of comics will remain in its regular features section location, another half-page will be published, but in a different location each day. Today's paper had it in the classified section.
Star-Ledger editors did not respond to requests for comment.
The editor's note added that those comics that were chosen to remain on the main comics page are among the most requested by readers. It also included a phone number in the note where readers can call with complaints or concerns.
"Be assured we will listen carefully to your comments," the note said.
