Azcentral.com, the shared site of Gannett’s Arizona Republic and KPNX-TV in Phoenix, set page-view records Tuesday and Wednesday tied to the massive storms that tore through Arizona.

According to Mike Coleman, the Arizona Republic’s vice president of digital media, azcentral.com recorded 7.1 million page views and 551,000 visits on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the site reached a record-high 8.7 million page views and 568,000 visits. The site’s previous record for page views in a single day was 5.5 million.

In addition, on Thursday the Arizona Republic achieved more than a quarter-million page views to its various mobile editions for the first time.

“The news that drove this traffic was rather remarkable,” Coleman tells E&P. “The storm dropped huge amounts of rain and hail in the Phoenix area, and spurred tornadoes in Flagstaff (an extremely rare event). And it came just two days after the Valley was still setting heat records of 100+ degrees.”
