Strike Deadline Extended at 'Globe and Mail'

By: E&P Staff Talks between Globe and Mail management and the union representing nearly 500 workers will extend beyond the strike deadline set for just after midnight Tuesday.

Bargainers for the Canadian national newspaper and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union scheduled negotiating sessions for Tuesday and Thursday, a spokesperson for the newspaper told E&P.

In a separate statement, the union said "there will be no strike, lockout or work-to-rule action earlier than midnight Thursday."

The union said it was imposing a news blackout on the talks.

Last weekend, members of the union representing newsroom, sales and circulation employees overwhelmingly rejected what the newspaper said was its final contract offer.

The proposal called for a two-year wage freeze and a change in pension plans.

Union members, including journalists, photographers, sales staff and circulation workers, voted Saturday 260-32 to reject the offer, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union said in a statement.
