STUDENT NEWSPAPER SURVIVES VOTE

The student paper at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh survived a student government vote this week that threatened to put the weekly out of business.

In a voice vote with only one apparent abstention and no nay votes, the Oshkosh Student Association (OSA) agreed Tuesday night to continue recognizing the Advance-Titan as a student organization, Editor in Chief Amy Holschbach said. Last week several OSA senators, upset about how the paper covers campus affairs, had appeared set to withdraw that recognition.

If it were not considered a student organization, the 8,500-circulation paper would have lost its office space on campus, its equipment and an operating subsidy that this year amounted to $8,100.

Holschbach said the paper has scheduled a public forum on Nov. 1 to discuss how the Advance-Titan covers campus organizations.
