By: E&P Staff Journalists want more training, according to a new study from The Poynter Institute and the News University -- a project of Poynter funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Of the 2,500-plus journalists participating in the survey by phone or e-mail, 95% of the print workers and 96% of broadcast employees said they were interested in a range of skills training. Those under the age of 45 and those with less than 10 years in the business were most enthusiastic about training.
While only 18% had experience with online education or e-learning, 72% said they were interested in this type of training.
The top topics of interest included leadership strategies, newsroom management skills, legal issues such as privacy/libel, ethics and values, writing/reporting techniques, and multimedia storytelling.
News University was created to provide journalists with distance-learning opportunities.
