By: Staff reports First-Quarter Earnings Released
Thomson Corp. reported 11% higher revenues, excluding acquisitions, and reduced losses
in the first quarter of 2000 as the company moves away from newspapers and toward
electronic-based publishing.
Thomson said first-quarter losses of $22 million, due to seasonality of its businesses,
compared favorably with the year-ago losses of $72 million.
Thomson is selling all its newspapers, except Toronto's Globe and Mail to focus on
electronic-based information. The newspapers to be sold, counted as a discontinued
operation, reported earnings rose 11% to $20 million in the quarter on revenues of $201
million, up 3%.
