Times Trims Ticker Tape

By: E&P Staff Citing the rising cost of newsprint -- and the real-time numbers generated by hundreds of business-oriented Web sites -- The New York Times is eliminating several financial results tables and trimming the rest of its stock-market listings

The World Business section, which had appeared daily as a separate, if thin, section, will be incorporated into the main Business Day section.

Beginning Tuesday, the Times said, it is eliminating what it referred to as "secondary" listings: the tables for the Nasdaq small-capitalization market; preferred stocks; and foreign stocks; active bond issues; stock exchange bond trading; and trading in agency and zero-coupon bonds; commodities and daily gold prices. The newspaper said its daily futures table will include prices for the active near-month contract only.

Big changes are also coming to the Big Board and Nasdaq listings. New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq listings will no longer show a stock's daily high and low prices, though the 52-week high and low prices will be retained. Other stock information will appear on a rotation throughout the week: Price-to-earnings ratio on Tuesdays and Fridays; dividend prices on Wednesdays and Saturdays; and the yield on Thursday.

The Times said all eliminated or condensed information will be available online at www.nytimes.com/business, the paper said.

On Monday, the Business Day section that usually focuses on media business was replaced by what the paper called a special issue of Business Day, titled "Outlook The Markets." A Times spokesman said there are no plans to replace the Monday edition focus on media business.
