Top Cartoon Honor for 'Luann' Creator

By: Dave Astor "Luann" creator Greg Evans won the Reuben Award as cartoonist of the year.

Evans, whose 1985-founded comic appears in more than 350 newspapers via United Media, received the honor Saturday night at the National Cartoonists Society gathering in Kansas City.

The NCS also presented awards in 12 division categories, a number of them newspaper-related. "Pearls Before Swine" creator Stephan Pastis of United won for best comic strip, "Ballard Street" creator Jerry Van Amerongen of Creators Syndicate for best comic panel, and Tom Toles of The Washington Post and Universal Press Syndicate for best editorial cartoons.

Glenn McCoy, whose Belleville (Ill.) News-Democrat editorial cartoons and "Duplex" comic are distributed by Universal, won the greeting-card category. And Bob Rich won for newspaper illustration.

Also, as previously announced, former Village Voice/Universal cartoonist Jules Feiffer received the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award. Caniff, one of the founders of the NCS in 1946, created "Terry and the Pirates" and "Steve Canyon."
