TORONTO'S FREE NEWSPAPER WAR COOLS DOWN

By: Staff Reports Torstar, Metro Join Forces

Toronto's two biggest commuter dailies have decided to join forces. Torstar
Corp. and Metro International SA announced Tuesday that they will merge the tabs
they launched last summer into Metro Today, which will roll out on May 1
with an initial distribution of 180,000 copies in the transit system.

Torstar, parent of The Toronto Star, will own 75% of the new company. The
union is likely to increase pressure on Toronto's third commuter paper,
Quebecor's FYI Toronto, which relies on street distribution.
