By: E&P Staff The Daily Breeze in Torrance, Calif., has promoted Managing Editor Toni Sciacqua to editor on Thursday, filling the position left vacant by former editor and interim publisher Phillip Sanfield, who left the paper in mid-August.

Sciacqua, 37, will be taking over the print and online editions of the Daily Breeze, a 65,000 circulation daily paper covering the South Bay and Harbor Area. Her appointment follows last month?s arrival of Linda Lindus as the Breeze's new publisher, who praised the promotion of her colleague.

Sciacqua, who holds a bachelor?s degree in journalism from USC, started working as a Breeze copy editor and designer in 1998. She was promoted to news editor in 2002, and then managing editor in 2007. Before that, Sciacqua worked on the copy desk of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, which later became a sister paper of the Breeze. Both papers are part of the Los Angeles Newspaper Group.

"I'm so proud to be working at a paper with such a high-quality, veteran bunch of journalists," Sciacqua told the Daily Breeze. She also plans to expand the paper?s use of the Web and social media. "You don't get community news at this level very many places," she added. "The quality is already here, so my job is to make sure the mix is right in print and the depth is right online."

"Toni is a strong leader with deep roots in the South Bay," publisher Lindus told her paper. "In the 11-plus years she's been with the Daily Breeze, she has had the opportunity to experience dramatic changes not only in the world, but within our news agencies.?
