Transcon Adds NewspaperDirect E-editions for All Titles

By: E&P Staff Montreal-based Transcontinental Media is working with NewspaperDirect in Vancouver, British Columbia, to create digital editions of its newspapers. A dozen dailies already have full-feature electronic editions, and the company plans to roll out the remaining titles over the next few months.

Of the available digital-edition solutions NewspaperDirect's technology best fit Transcontinental's needs, according to Transcontinental Newspaper Group Vice President Marc-Noel Ouellette. "As part of Transcontinental's online strategy, partnering with this niche-based company was very in line with our growth objectives," he said in a statement.

With more than 170 papers across Canada, including a dozen dailies, Transcontinental reaches, on average, three million readers a week in English- and French-speaking communities. This electronic editions will give readers user-friendly interactivity while retaining the newspapers' look.

The new editions can be accessed from any Web browser and will give subscribers instant access to digital replicas of the full newspapers, on desktop or laptop computers, Web-enabled mobile phones and PDAs -- often before the printed editions hit newsstands. Print advertisers will see their ads online and will have more options to enhance the their ads.

NewspaperDirect's SmartEdition technology provides navigation tools, keyword searching, media monitoring with e-mail notification, article sharing, a one-click "add to my blog" feature, instant translation in up to 12 languages, integrated audio, back-issue access, photo galleries, social-media integration and proprietary reader commenting and community features.
