Twitter Growth Slows, Engagement Grows

By: E&P Staff A new report from the marketing software firm HubSpot looks at Twitter usage and determines that growth is slowing.

The firm chose the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Airways flight that made a dramatic landing in New York's Hudson River (which kicked off a torrent of Twitter activity) as a base for its January "State of the Twittersphere" study.

That event, along with celebrity tweets, increased the month-to-month growth of Twitter to a high of 13% as of March 2009. As of October 2009, user growth fell to 3.5% compared to September 2009.

HubSpot measures Twitter growth by tracking 5 million profiles and account-creation dates.

Not surprising is that those who do use Twitter, have more followers, follow more people and send out more tweets in January 2010 compared to July 2009.

Also HubSpot found that Twitter has gained popularity globally. Forty percent of the top 20 Twitter locations in January 2010 are outside of North America.
