By: E&P Staff E&P has announced the winners of the 2006 EPpy awards for interactive media, given Friday at the Interactive Media Conference & Trade Show in Las Vegas.
Awards were presented in 32 different categories for excellence in online media, both for design and for content.
In the category of Best Overall Newspaper-Affiliated Internet Service with more than 1 million unique monthly visitors,
Washingtonpost.com took top honors. In the category of Best Overall Newspaper-Affiliated Internet Service under 1 million unique monthly visitors, the
Roanoke.com was the winner.
Since 1996, the EPpy Awards have honored the best new media services from the newspaper industry. In 2003, the awards were expanded for the first time to honor the best work in the online field by media outlets, including newspapers, radio, and broadcast/cable TV. Each year, an independent panel of industry experts selects the top examples of interactive services in a variety of categories. The awards are co-sponsored by E&P and Mediaweek magazines.
An article at The Washington Post hailed the company winning five of the awards: Washingtonpost.com (which took home three), Slate Magazine, and Newsweek.com.
"This is a validation of what we were trying to do for the past few years, trying to bring down the walls between the journalists and the readers," said Jim Brady, the vice president and executive editor of Washingtonpost.com, who was also a panelist at the conference. "We're trying to take the world-class journalism of The Washington Post and merge it with these new media. Almost anything is possible, and we certainly see this as an indication that we're headed in the right direction."
Greg Reeves, whose Crime Scene KC won for best news blog, told his newspaper, the Kansas City Star: ?Dialogue and interactivity are crucial to the blog, but the blog itself is the day?s crime news first and crime-related news with an attitude second. I love writing Crime Scene KC, and I hope it continues to be an active and constructive community dialogue.?
The Naples Daily News won for best news site in its category. Rob Curley, the Daily News? director of new media, said support from all levels of the newspaper was crucial, according to an article in his paper.
?It?s fitting that this awards ceremony was in Las Vegas because I thought the odds were long that we would win something,? Curley said. ?It?s not that I don?t think our sites are great or that the people working on them haven?t done amazing work, but we?ve barely scraped the surface on what these sites are going to do in the very near future.?
