By: E&P Staff Doug Jehl, deputy editor of The New York Times' Washington Bureau, is the new foreign editor of the Washington Post, according to a report today by Politico.
Jehl succeeds David Hoffman, who will become a contributing editor at the Post.
"Doug has a deep knowledge of both intelligence, military and terrorism issues, but also has extensive experience as a foreign correspondent," Post Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli and Managing Editor Liz Spayd wrote in a memo obtained by Politico.
Jehl currently oversees the Times' coverage of national security issues. He was a part of The New York Times team that won a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting, as he reported from Saudi Arabia following the Sept. 11 attacks. He also helped direct the paper's coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan, for which the Times won a 2009 Pulitzer for international reporting. Over the course of his career, he has covered conflicts in Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Israel, and Lebanon.
"We believe Doug will bring intellect, creativity and breadth to our foreign report, whether we're aggressively pursuing news or staking out key areas of enterprise," Brauchli and Spayd wrote.
Jehl will join the Post at the end of July.
