Washington Post Third Quarter Profit Drops

Posted
By: Newspaper publisher Washington Post Co. said Thursday its third-quarter profit edged down 1 percent, in part on higher operating expenses and soft newspaper publishing and television broadcasting revenue.

Earnings after preferred dividends slipped to $72.2 million, or $7.60 per share, compared with $73.1 million, or $7.60 per share, in the prior year.

Per share results were impacted by fewer outstanding shares in the current period.

The current quarter's results included a $5.9 million, or 62 cents per share, gain on the sale of property at its television station in Miami.

Operating expenses grew to $912 million from $838.2 million.

Quarterly operating revenue climbed 8 percent to $1.02 billion from $946.9 million in the previous year on revenue growth from its education and cable television divisions.

Newspaper publishing, television broadcasting and magazine publishing revenue all experienced declines.
