'Wisconsin State Journal' Names Editor

By: The editor of the La Crosse Tribune has been named the new top editor of the state's second largest newspaper, the Wisconsin State Journal.

John Smalley's appointment was announced Tuesday. He will begin the new job in early January, replacing Ellen Foley who resigned in October.

The 50-year-old Smalley was raised in Evansville. He was editor of the Globe-Gazette in Mason City, Iowa, before returning to the La Crosse Tribune as editor in 2002. He had previously served as local news editor of the La Crosse Tribune.

The Tribune and the Globe-Gazette are both owned by Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa, which also owns half of Capital Newspapers, the publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal.
