'WSJ' Down in July, Scripps Up

By: E&P Staff The Wall Street Journal got hammered this month as Dow Jones & Co. reported that advertising linage at the paper declined 7.9% for July. General advertising decreased 5.2%, technology and financial linage plummeted 28.3% and 20.7%, respectively. The culprits: weakness in several sectors including auto, travel, communications, computer hardware, software and retail. Classified advertising was up though 13% because of growth in real estate.

Over at E.W. Scripps Co., total newspaper advertising revenue for July grew 5.5% or $42.3 million. Local was up 6.6% or $12.3 million. Classified was up 8.4% or $17.8 million. National slipped 8% or $2.8 million.
