By: E&P Staff Few online newspapers, if any, have pulled off the feat of making people pay for subscriptions with success like The Wall Street Journal's. Now for the first time in its seven-year history, the online version will be available for free in order to drive new subscriptions.

From Nov. 8 to Nov. 12, anyone can access the entire site for free during its "Open House."

"We are excited to showcase our many great features," Todd Larsen, president, consumer electronic publishing at Dow Jones & Co., said in a statement. "Our research has shown that when people have more exposure to the site, they become interested and want to subscribe."

The company reports that during the past year, 90% of those who sampled the paper's online content chose to become full-fledged subscribers. The annual price is $79, while those who get the print and online version pay $39. The Online Journal has more than 700,000 paid subscribers.
