By: (AP) Yahoo! Inc. is adding voice-recognition technology to its telephone-related services, allowing consumers to call friends over the Internet simply by speaking their names.
The voice technology allows users to speak their commands into a Yahoo service that reads e-mail and news information aloud.
It also enables voice-activated dialing on Web-based telephone calls -- part of a burgeoning technology called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. The service, called Yahoo Phone Card, can be used from regular telephones anywhere in the country. Domestic calls cost 10 cents a minute.
The services are being sold in partnership with Nuance Communications Inc., Net2Phone Inc., and SpeechWorks International Inc.
