I would have to say that the idea of philanthropic/community support of local journalism, divorced from the commercial need to make money, has a certain nobility about it. However, there's nothing terribly new about the effort and nothing to suggest that this foundation-fueled campaign will be any more successful, in the long run, than those philanthropic journalistic efforts which have gone before. In fact, the RFA's goal of essentially buying space in local periodicals, through subsidized reporting, may further erode the value of local news, by absolving local newspapers of their historic responsibility to inform their communities.
