2013 Courage in Journalism Awards Announced

In many parts of the world, it takes courage to be a journalist: in Afghanistan, Najiba Ayubi, Managing Director for The Killid Group in Afghanistan, has been threatened by gunmen for reporting on corruption and power abuse.

In Cambodia, Bopha Phorn, a reporter from The Cambodia Daily, faced heavy gunfire for investigating illegal logging in the jungle.

 In Syria, Nour Kelze, photojournalist for Reuters in Syria, risks her life at the front lines every day documenting the human cost of the Syrian revolution.

Each year, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) honors three women journalists with the Courage in Journalism Award to shine a spotlight in their courage and to promote the importance of a free press.

The 2013 IWMF Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Edna Machirori, the first black female editor of a newspaper in Zimbabwe. The 2013 Courage in Journalism and Lifetime Achievement Award ceremonies will be held in New York on October 23 Host: Cynthia McFadden (ABC News); Los Angeles on October 29 Co-hosts: Cindi Leive (Glamour) and Olivia Wilde (CBS)  

Founded in 1990 by a group of prominent U.S. women journalists, the International Women's Media Foundation is a Washington-based organization that is dedicated to strengthening the role of women journalists worldwide. The IWMF believes the news media worldwide are not truly free and representative without the equal voice of women. The IWMF celebrates the courage of women journalists who overcome threats and oppression to speak out on global issues. The IWMF's programs empower women journalists with the training, support and network to become leaders in the news industry.
