41 Take Buyouts At Baltimore 'Sun,' Layoffs Still Possible

By: Forty-one employees at The (Baltimore) Sun accepted a company buyout offer and a spokeswoman said Monday that layoffs were possible.

"It's a possibility. We'll know for certain maybe tomorrow," spokeswoman Linda Yurche said. "If anything, we're probably talking about a handful of people."

The company had hoped about 50 workers would accept its offer, the latest in a series of buyouts and downsizing measures in recent years.

Friday was the last day at work for most of those who took the buyout, Yurche said.

Meanwhile, contract talks continued between the paper and the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, which represents 480 of the paper's 1,250 employees. The guild's contract with Chicago-based Tribune Co. expires June 24.
