By: E&P Staff The American Association of Sunday and Features Editors announced its top 10 features sections at its annual conference in Portland on Sept. 24.
The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer was recognized for its ?fresh? writing on a ?good range of topics, ranging from art to fashion to local arts to food.? Its features section was also noticed for its inclusion of ?online elements including online slide shows and videos.?
The AASFE recognized Canada?s Edmonton Journal for its ?diverse cover designs, use of alternative story forms, and creative graphic touches,? and said that all of the feature section pages ?show care, rewarding the reader for opening the section.?
The award for ?most successful risk-taking? was given to The Kansas City Star for its ?Bold presentation, imaginative ideas, [and] lively writing,? and the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal Star was acknowledged for its in-depth, multi-dimensional coverage on one local topic each day, which gave the story ?a local flavor.?
The strong ?sense of identity? of the Minneapolis Star Tribune's features section earned it a place in the top 10, with solid writing and photography and ?key contributions from readers,? while the ?diversity and spirit? of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel section was recognized for its ?fresh blend of engaging graphics and high-quality writing.?
The AASFE noticed the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times for striking ?the right balance between writing and design? with its ?engaging photography? and ?impression that a wise editor's hand is at work.?
Minnesota newspapers cracked the top 10 twice with the inclusion of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which AASFE judges recognized for its ?sense of fun and creativity, along with a strong reader interactivity? that includes quizzes and ?Land of 10,000 Look A Likes? photo pages.
The Washington Post features staff was noted for putting ?a premium on originality and storytelling? with its ?surprising, witty, risk-taking? stories, and the AASFE complimented the Star-News of Wilmington, N.C., for ?perform[ing] far above its weight class? with its ?broad and varied menu of content.?
