By: E&P Staff The American Press Institute board of directors has elected Thomas Silvestri as its chairman. Silvestri, who is the publisher of the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, succeeds outgoing chairman Mark Contreras, senior vice president/newspapers at the E.W. Scripps Co.
"Although the leadership that Mark Contreras provided as chairman of API will be impossible to replace, we are delighted to welcome Tom Silvestri to the position," Drew Davis, API president and executive director, said in a statement. "Tom's enthusiasm and innovative spirit will help ensure the API remains positioned to provide leadership development, create actionable knowledge on relevant issues and serve as a forum for industry collaboration."
Additionally the board of directors elected Robert J. Weil, McClatchy vice president of operations, as vice chairman and Charles V. Pittman, senior vice president of newspapers for Schurz Communications, as treasurer.
API announced new members of the board: Mark Aldam, senior vice president of Hearst Newspapers; David H. Black, president of Black Press Ltd.; Michael Gugliotto, president of Pioneer Newspapers; Michelle Krans, senior vice president/strategy and development at Gannett's U.S. Community Publishing division; James Moroney, publisher and CEO of The Dallas Morning News; Katharine Weymouth, CEO of Washington Post Media.
Caroline Diamond Harrison, publisher of the Staten Island (N.Y.) Advance; Caroline Little, CEO North American for Guardian News & Media; and Joseph Lodovic, president of MediaNews Group were re-elected to serve three-year terms as directors.
API held a meeting for its board of directors in Reston, Va., Nov. 9-10.
