By: E&P Staff Karla Garrett Harshaw, longtime editor of the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun, is retiring at the end of 2009.
Harshaw, 54, has spent nearly 40 years in journalism, 16 as editor of the News-Sun, a Cox Ohio Publishing newspaper. She joined the paper full time in 1977, after participating in a summer program run by Dayton Newspapers to recruit more minority journalists into the industry. Since then, she has served as its assistant city editor, features editor, assistant business manager and editor.
Harshaw has been active in her personal and professional communities, serving on committees such as Pulitzer Prize nominating juries and Buckeye Trails Girl Scouts. She was also the first minority woman to serve as president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.
Harshaw has been the vice president of community development for COP since 2006, and for much of the past year has been an executive on loan to Wilberforce University.
