By: E&P Staff Atex, in Reading, England, sponsored the Martin Adler Prize at The Rory Peck Awards on Nov. 19. Named for the award-winning freelance journalist, photographer and filmmaker murdered in Somalia in 2006, the prize recognizes the work of freelance newsgatherers in reporting and producing important news stories under dangerous circumstances.
The 2009 Martin Adler Prize recipients are Talal Abu Rahma, reporter, producer and cameraman who works regularly for CNN and France 2 and was present during the Israel's Gaza Strip offensive; Raed Athamneh a fixer, driver and field producer who has worked with crews from the BBC, ARD and Al Jazeera English, helping produce stories featured on the front page of The New York Times; and Ashraf Mashharawi cameraman, producer and director who worked for Channel 4 News inside Gaza when it was first bombed and then invaded last winter.
This is the second consecutive year that Atex has sponsored the Martin Adler Prize and recognizes freelancers' contribution in bringing critical news to the mainstream media.
"Awards like the Martin Adler Prize demonstrate that without people on the ground working directly in harm's way, some of the globe's most influential news stories would never see the light of day," Atex Group CEO John Hawkins said in a statement.
The Rory Peck Awards is an international competition that celebrates the work of freelance cameramen and camerawomen. The awards ceremony is the main fundraiser for The Rory Peck Trust, which supports freelance newsgatherers and their families worldwide in times of need and promotes their welfare and safety.
