By: E&P Staff Bill Kovach, veteran journalist, editor and author, will be bestowed the 2010 W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism from the National Press Foundation.
Kovach has been in the industry for 50 years and has served in such roles as chief of The New York Times' Washington Bureau, executive editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and curator of the Nieman Fellowships at Harvard University. He is the founding chairman of the Committee of Concerned Journalists as well. He has served on a number of journalism-related boards and committees.
Kovach co-authored ?The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect? with Tom Rosenstiel in 2001, and it has since been translated into 38 languages and has won numerous awards. The two also worked together to write 1999?s ?Warp Speed: America in the Age of Mixed Media.?
?Perhaps no one in his time has more epitomized the values of our profession ? the sense that journalism must be tough but fair, uncompromising but humane, and above all searching, always asking more questions ? than Bill Kovach,? the NPF judges said in a statement.
The award will be officially presented on Feb. 16 at the NPF?s 27th annual fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C.
