By: E&P Staff Boston.com launched a newly designed sports section as ESPN focuses on several local sports sites in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Dallas.

The revamped sports area includes the "Globe Sports Wire," a feature that collects the latest updates from the newsroom and a new timeline for the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics and Bruins games featuring past and present information. Users also can search and sort information by sports teams.

Additionally, Boston.com hired Matt Pepin as sports editor who will oversee the site. He comes from Varsity845.com and The Times Herald-Record in Middletown, N.Y.

Joe Sullivan, sports editor of The Boston Globe, oversaw the redesign.

The Globe is launching a multi-media campaign "We are Boston Sports" to kick off the new sports section.

According to Omniture data, the sports section of Boston.com draws 4.5 million visitors per month from the Boston area. Nationally, the site has an average of 9.8 million visitors per month.
