BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com Win ONA Awards for Breaking News Coverage

BostonGlobe.com and Boston.com won the 2013 Online News Association award for breaking news for coverage of the April Marathon bombings and their aftermath. BostonGlobe.com also won the Knight Award for Public Service for the interactive series on a year in Boston's Bowdoin-Geneva neighborhood, "68 Blocks: Life, Death, Hope," The awards were given Saturday in Atlanta at the group's annual banquet.

"The marathon bombings, that whole stretch in April, marked a horrific set of events for our region. The public craved information during the dark hours of that long week, and the newsroom of the Boston Globe responded to the absolute best of its ability," editor Brian McGrory said. "Our journalists worked for long hours in dangerous situations to keep the public informed and get the story right, using every means of digital storytelling available. We're grateful to our colleagues in the industry for recognizing our efforts to make sense of this tragedy."

  The ONA also nominated BostonGlobe.com for awards in these categories:

 

• -       General Excellence in Online Journalism, for BostonGlobe.com, the subscription website for The Boston Globe that has been recognized for its innovative and pioneering use of responsive design;
• -       The Gannett Foundation Award for Watchdog Journalism for  "Driven To The Edge," The Globe Spotlight Team's nine-month investigation of Boston's $1 billion taxi industry  

"The Globe newsroom has worked hard, creatively, and well to expand and embrace new forms of digital storytelling," McGrory said. "We're grateful to our colleagues in the industry for recognizing our efforts to find innovative ways to keep our readers informed."
